Ugens digitale tendenser: #35, 2020

? Sociale medier

NBC News skriver:

“Facebook on Wednesday banned about 900 pages and groups and 1,500 ads tied to the pro-Trump conspiracy theory QAnon, part of a sweeping action that also restricted the reach of over 10,000 Instagram pages and almost 2,000 Facebook groups pushing the baseless conspiracy theory, which has spawned real-world violence.”

“Virality circuit breakers. Platforms should detect, label, suspend algorithmic amplification, and prioritize rapid review and fact-checking of trending coronavirus content that displays reliable misinformation markers, which can be drawn from the existing body of coronavirus mis/disinformation.”

Facebook frygter ny iOS

Digiday:
“In iOS14, Apple will require users to give consent for apps to share their data — held on its anonymized identifier for advertisers, known as the IDFA — with other apps and websites. Experts expect opt-in rates to be low, which will hamper ad targeting and measurement of iOS audiences.”

Facebook beskyldes for at overse Kenosha-advarsler

The Verge:
“At least two separate Facebook users reported the account for inciting violence prior to the shooting, The Verge has learned. In each case, the group and its counter-protest event were examined by Facebook moderators and found not to be in violation of the platform’s policies.”

Alle får det nye Facebook-design til september

The Verge:
“Facebook’s “classic” experience, the interface with the iconic blue navigation bar at the top, is disappearing for good in September. Engadget reports that a Facebook support page has been updated saying everyone will soon have the new design. Although you can temporarily switch back to the old interface on Facebook’s site, the button warns that “the classic Facebook will no longer be available starting in September.””

Social Media Today skriver:

“After testing out different variations of the option, Instagram has now officially added a new listing of suggested posts at the end of your main feed, for whenever you scroll through all of the latest updates from the people and profiles that you’re following.”

YouTube

YouTube fjernede dobbelt så mange videoer

Protocol:
“When YouTube sent content moderators home in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it dramatically expanded its use of automated filters — and that led to twice as many videos being taken down in the second quarter of 2020 as the first. The spike stems from YouTube’s decision to “cast a wider net” for potentially violative videos in the absence of human moderators, and highlights the imperfect science of automatically policing content.”

Social Media Today:
“After assessing its options following the Trump administration’s Executive Order, which will essentially force it to sell to a US company, or face a ban in the American market, TikTok has now confirmed that it will indeed be pursuing legal action against the US Government over the official directive.”

“We simply have no choice,” skriver TikTok i et blogindlæg.

“TikTok Chief Executive Officer Kevin Mayer has resigned just months after taking the helm of the viral short video app, stepping out of the crossfire as the Trump administration targets the business owned by China’s ByteDance Ltd.”

The Telegraph foretrækker Snapchat fremfor TikTok

Journalism.co.uk:
“Unlike other social networks, Snapchat curates and moderates content before it reaches its 229m users, rather than having an open feed where unchecked content can go viral. This allows the platform to effectively combat misinformation as it prioritises working with trustworthy organisations. Another advantage of the curated environment is that there are fewer distractions on the app which makes establishing a habit-forming relationship with readers much easier.”

? Digitale medietendenser

Berlingske går ind i lydmediet Listen To News

MediaWatch:

“Apple News+ was deeply flawed from the start,” skriver What’s New In Publishing:

“The root of the issue is that magazines and news are not the same thing. The mindset a consumer approaches news articles with is different from how they sit back and read a magazine or newspaper edition (print or digital), and the UX of news and magazine apps usually differ accordingly.”

Simon Owens:
“And then this week the company announced it’s debuting a new subscription offering: for $7.95, subscribers get all-you-can-eat access to original podcasts and 11,000 audiobooks. While quite a few of those books are themselves Audible originals, I’m guessing the vast majority are licensed from outside publishers in some capacity — in the same sense that Netflix licenses seasons of Breaking Bad or Friends.”

Spotify søger chef for lydbøger

Tubefilter skriver:

“The role will report directly to Spotify’s head of new initiatives/partnerships, with the exec overseeing all audiobook-related endeavors, including creative, content strategy, editorial, and programming — including licensing third-party audiobooks as well as developing original content for Spotify.”

…og eksperimenterer med virtuelle events

TechCrunch:
“An upcoming feature in development at Spotify could help turn things around, by again connecting artists with their fans through ticketed live music events. This time, however, instead of helping fans find live concerts, as in the pre-pandemic days, the new feature will alert fans to the artist’s upcoming “virtual events.””

…og kæmper med falske podcasts

“Spotify has a counterfeit podcast problem,” skriver Digiday. Problematikken går ud på, at Spotify har tilladt, at nogle brugere via Anchor (som Spotify købte i 2019) har oprettet podcasts med samme navne som populære podcasts.

Eksemplerne tæller blandt andet ‘Serial’ og ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’.

What’s New In Publishing:
“Ten years ago, display advertising made up 58% of digital publisher revenue and subscriptions only 7%. Subscriptions now account for 22% of total revenue; with display advertising having shrunk to 42%. As income from display continues to decline, the shift towards subscriptions and other diverse revenue sources is only set to grow, accelerated in part by the pandemic. The publishers that adapt to this change will be the ones that have the most to gain when the storm passes.”

“News industry body Digital Content Next has written to Apple asking how its members could qualify for a special deal like one given to Amazon in 2017.Under that arrangement, Apple offered Amazon a 15% fee on subscriptions for Amazon’s Prime Video app via the App Store, lower than a customary 30% fee.”

“Apple Inc. was spared from having to immediately reinstate Epic Games Inc.’s Fortnite on its App Store,” skrev Bloomberg onsdag.

Apple blocked Facebook from informing users that Apple would collect 30 percent of in-app purchases made through a planned new feature, Facebook tells Reuters. Apple said the update violated an App Store rule that doesn’t let developers show “irrelevant” information to users.

Er adblocking på tilbagetog?

The Audience Project:
“Whether this development has had an impact on the use of ad blocking is hard to tell. However, when looking at how many are using ad blockers, we also see that these numbers are decreasing. From 2016 to 2020, the share of the online population using ad blockers has decreased across all countries. Today, less than one-third in the Nordics are using ad blockers, while Germany – with close to half of the online population (48%) using ad blockers – is the country where ad blocking is most widespread. In the US and UK, 41% and 36% are using ad blockers, respectively.”

Ny Chrome-adblocker overrasker medier

Flere medier er angiveligt blevet overrasket over timingen, skriver Digiday:

Four senior programmatic managers and executives at global publishers contacted for this story said they hadn’t heard about the new Chrome filter — or hadn’t received information about it from their Google reps about it since the Chrome announced the rollout was coming in May.

Flere kigger på kontekstuel annoncering

Digiday:
“Behind the scenes, some advertisers are busy weighing the pros and cons of diverting some of those media dollars into contextual targeting. While contextual targeting has previously seemed too far from precise user-level targeting, advertisers are reassessing that stance given the lack of alternatives.

“Contextual targeting is going to be the new black in mobile advertising,” said Devon DeBlasio, product marketing director at ad tech vendor Neustar. “One-to-one advertising was a misnomer that marketers thought they were getting in place of just automation and efficiency from a media buying standpoint.””
