🤬 Facebook ville være et bedre sted – sådan gik det ikke

Nærmest alle i mediebranchen kender Face­books 2018-opda­ter­ing af News Feed-algo­rit­men. Ændrin­gen skulle betyde mere "menings­fyldt" ind­hold og min­dre ind­hold fra Face­book-sider – og medi­er.

Face­book skulle blive et bedre, gladere sted – men i stedet er vre­den steget, kan The Wall Street Jour­nal fortælle:

"With­in the com­pa­ny, though, staffers warned the change was hav­ing the oppo­site effect, the doc­u­ments show. It was mak­ing Facebook’s plat­form an angri­er place.

Com­pa­ny researchers dis­cov­ered that pub­lish­ers and polit­i­cal par­ties were reori­ent­ing their posts toward out­rage and sen­sa­tion­al­ism. That tac­tic pro­duced high lev­els of com­ments and reac­tions that trans­lat­ed into suc­cess on Face­book."

"Deter­min­ing whether social media plays a role in wors­en­ing par­ti­san ani­mos­i­ty is impor­tant because polit­i­cal polar­iza­tion has per­ni­cious con­se­quences. We con­clude that social media plat­forms are not the main cause of ris­ing par­ti­san hatred, but use of these plat­forms inten­si­fies divi­sive­ness and thus con­tributes to its cor­ro­sive effects."

😬 Facebook sendte fejlbehæftede data til forskere

Fra The New York Times:

"The data includ­ed the inter­ac­tions of only about half of Facebook’s U.S. users — the ones who engaged with polit­i­cal pages enough to make their polit­i­cal lean­ings clear — not all of them as the com­pa­ny had said. Face­book told the researchers that data about users out­side of the Unit­ed States, which has also been shared, did not appear to be inac­cu­rate."

🔐 Facebook styrker krypteringen i WhatsApp

"Texts sent on What­sApp are already pro­tect­ed so that they can only be seen by the sender and recip­i­ent. Peo­ple have been able to back up their mes­sages in the cloud, using Alpha­bet Inc..’s Google Dri­ve and Apple Inc.’s icloud. 💌 Erfaringer efter et år på Substack

For et år siden sagde Casey New­ton sit job som jour­nal­ist på The Verge op for at leve af det nyheds­brev, han havde bygget op under navnet The Inter­face – og som skift­ede navn til Plat­former.

I en ny artikel gør han sta­tus efter det første år. Og der er inter­es­sante erfaringer – såsom:

🍪 Googles udskydelse har fjernet presset på cookie-alternativer

Det bør ikke over­raske nogen. Efter Google har udskudt tid­spunk­tet for, hvornår Chrome-browseren ikke læn­gere vil under­støtte tred­jepartscook­ies, er der sjovt nok ikke samme iver efter at teste alter­na­tive kom­mer­cielle pro­duk­ter hos medierne, skriv­er Digi­day.

"Now, though pub­lish­ers said adver­tis­ers remain inter­est­ed in the con­tex­tu­al and first-par­ty prod­ucts they’ve built — and they them­selves are com­mit­ted to stay­ing the course in offer­ing them — some wor­ry adver­tis­ers could shy away from plans to spend on cook­ie­less adver­tis­ing. “There is a ques­tion as to whether or not adver­tis­ers are going to pull back,” said Rebe­ca Solórzano,svp of pro­gram­mat­ic oper­a­tions and strat­e­gy at Forbes, regard­ing the gen­er­al con­ver­sa­tion among pub­lish­ers."

"Apple is not an ille­gal monop­o­list, but its con­duct is still anti­com­pet­i­tive. The core of the judge's ver­dict is that Epic failed to prove Apple oper­ates an ille­gal monop­oly, in part because it failed to ade­quate­ly define the mar­ket. In want­i­ng a broad rul­ing that could poten­tial­ly crack open the iOS plat­form, Epic over­reached, the judge says. But Apple isn't com­plete­ly off the hook. "

🔎 Mozilla har store planer med Firefox Suggest

Hvis du bruger Fire­fox-browseren, har du fået en ny funk­tion, der giv­er dig forslag i forhold til, hvad du led­er efter. Den hed­der Fire­fox Sug­gest.

Fast Com­pa­ny har skrevet om Sug­gest, og det lad­er virke­lig til, at folkene bag har store forhåb­ninger omkring den nye tjen­este.

"Peo­ple are strug­gling with infor­ma­tion over­load [...] Fire­fox Sug­gest will be a trust­wor­thy guide to find­ing the best of the web," siger Sele­na Deck­el­mann, der er "senior vice pres­i­dent" for Fire­fox hos Mozil­la.

😱 Deepfake møder pornografi

"MIT Tech­nol­o­gy Review has cho­sen not to name the ser­vice, which we will call Y, or use any direct quotes and screen­shots of its con­tents, to avoid dri­ving traf­fic to the site. [...]

Y is incred­i­bly easy to use. Once a user uploads a pho­to of a face, the site opens up a library of porn videos. The vast major­i­ty fea­ture women, though a small hand­ful also fea­ture men, most­ly in gay porn. A user can then select any video to gen­er­ate a pre­view of the face-swapped result with­in seconds—and pay to down­load the full ver­sion."
