“Between the most recent news that TikTok executives can choose which posts go viral using the platform’s heating feature, and the ticking time bomb in the shape of potential TikTok bans on both sides of the Atlantic, the sheen could well be fading on the well-polished narrative around the short-form video app.
But as always, when it comes to TikTok, marketers seem unfazed and continue to be enthralled by the platform.”

🤳 The New York Times er på TikTok
“The Times is a few years behind other publishers in creating a flagship TikTok account but already had some subbrands on the platform, including NYT Cooking and the Hard Fork podcast. It’s looking to hire social media video journalists. And it’s published three more TikToks.”
“Just over two years after Donald J. Trump’s accounts were suspended from Facebook and Instagram, Meta, the owner of the platforms, said on Wednesday that it would reinstate the former president’s access to the social media services.”
“IN THE MONTHS ahead of what’s likely to be a brutal Republican presidential primary, Donald Trump and his 2024 campaign are laying the groundwork for his big, bombastic return to major social media platforms. Such a return, though, would inevitably involve Trump screwing over one of his own companies — and he’s been telling confidants that he is prepared to do just that.”

📷 Fotografier får større fokus på Instagram i 2023
“Good news for Instagram purists – Instagram chief Adam Mosseri says that the platform has gone too hard on pushing videos, and will look to make photos more of a focus once again in 2023.”
💰 Meta betaler BuzzFeed kassen for at lave indhold
“Facebook parent Meta Platforms Inc. is paying BuzzFeed Inc. millions of dollars as part of an effort to bring more creators to the social-media giant’s platforms, according to people familiar with the situation.”
🤫 Instagram lancerer “quiet mode”
“First off, Instagram’s adding a new ‘Quiet Mode’, which will switch off all notifications, add a ‘Quiet Mode’ notifier to your profile status, and implement an auto-responder on your DMs.”
👤 …og dynamisk profilbillede
“Today, it’s Instagram’s turn to get on the avatar train, with a new feature that lets you add an alternative avatar profile photo, which users can then ‘flip’ in-stream.”
“Have you hovered over the Instagram app recently, too exhausted at the mere thought of all the notifications, widgets, inboxes and posts awaiting you to open it?
It wasn’t always this way. Until recently, Instagram’s success had always come from its relative simplicity. It didn’t even let you post photos from your desktop until 2021.”
🏆 Var det noget med et Meta-trofæ?
“Digital marketing agencies take note: Meta has launched a new certification for businesses, which will give you another way to showcase your Meta marketing expertise to prospective clients. “
📍 YouTube føjer geotagging til Shorts-upload
“YouTube’s looking to help users add more context to their Shorts clips, with the addition of location tagging within the upload flow in the app.”

🐦 Bør medier bruge Twitters kommende funktionalitet?
“Your employer’s logo might soon be attached to every tweet you make — for better or for worse.”
“Twitter has rolled out another update for Community Notes, with community-contributed contextual pointers now also being shown on quote tweets in the app.”
🔖 …og opdaterer bogmærkefunktion
“As you can see, in this new format, the Bookmark button has been added to the lower function display when you expand a tweet. That, ideally, will get more people using the option, which Elon personally views as a ‘silent Like’, and another measure of engagement with tweets.”
“More than 25 states have placed restrictions on the use of TikTok on state-owned equipment in recent weeks, and those restrictions have extended in some cases to public schools. Over a dozen major higher-education systems, including Auburn University, the University of Georgia and Oklahoma State University, recently banned TikTok in some form — from school-owned devices, the campus networks or both.”

“For publishers, this presents a huge opportunity. Brands will need help distributing the influx of new content, and publishers are in a prime position to provide that assistance. But are we ready? Do we have the infrastructure in place to handle the increased demand?
Only time will tell. But one thing is for sure: the world of brand content is about to get a whole lot bigger, and publishers need to prepare by focusing on strategies to scale their sponsored content programs.”
💡 Hvad betyder Wikipedia-“edits” for vores opfattelse af verden?
“The site is tackling more controversial edits, the results of which can reverberate across the internet.”

“The first quarter is off to a rocky start for publishers’ advertising businesses, and while that might not come as a surprise given the state of the economy — even for media execs who forecasted their companies’ revenue goals according to the headwinds in the market — January is pacing between 10% to 25% off their projected targets, according to three media executives. Three other execs profiled for this piece said their business is approximately even with Q1 2022.”
🤖 INMA-rapport: Generativ AI kan give stor gevinst for medier
“‘Generative AI is a new technology that has the potential to revolutionize the way we approach marketing, particularly in the realm of news subscriptions,’ according to a new INMA report. It finds that an average publisher can expect up to 5,700% return on investment if using generative AI to personalize its marketing. Additionally, on average, such a tool needs to save a marketer as little as 48 minutes per working week to pay for itself.”

“The co-founders of Informed are targeting news consumers who have ‘not enough time, [are] not reading that many articles, overwhelmed by the sheer amount that’s out there’ and want the best, most important stories cherry-picked for them. So as distinct from existing news bundlers, like PressReader, Informed does not offer full access to particular titles. […]
The Financial Times, New York Times, Economist, Reuters, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Telegraph, Der Spiegel, The Independent and Foreign Policy have all done deals to allow their content to appear on Informed.”
⚖️ USA sagsøger Google for annonce-dominans

Del 4: Udvikling og tech
Her får du et kig på nogle af ugens historier indenfor den digitale udvikling og teknologi, der enten direkte eller indirekte kan have betydning for medier/udgivere.
❓ BuzzFeed vil bruge AI til bl.a. quizzer
“The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday on a staff memo at BuzzFeed that laid out plans for the digital media company to use OpenAI — creator of ChatGPT — to help write quizzes and other content. In the memo, BuzzFeed CEO Jonah Peretti wrote AI will play a role in both editorial and business operations at BuzzFeed within the next year.”
“Tired of watching the same stuff? Here’s how to clear your profile or viewing history and escape the recommendation feedback loop on top video streaming sites.”
⏸ CNET sætter artikelbot på pause
“The call, which lasted under an hour, was held a week after CNET came under fire for its use of AI tools on stories and one day after The Verge reported that AI tools had been in use for months, with little transparency to readers or staff. CNET hadn’t formally announced the use of AI until readers noticed a small disclosure.”

“Data leverage can be deployed through at least four avenues: direct action (for instance, individuals banding together to withhold, “poison,” or redirect data), regulatory action (for instance, pushing for data protection policy and legal recognition of “data coalitions”), legal action (for instance, communities adopting new data-licensing regimes or pursuing a lawsuit), and market action (for instance, demanding large language models be trained only with data from consenting creators). “

“OpenAI is the hottest AI lab out there with one of the buzziest and most exciting products: ChatGPT. And Microsoft is its very good friend.
On Monday, the two companies announced that Microsoft was investing $10 billion into OpenAI (that’s on top of the $3 billion Microsoft has given OpenAI since 2019), and Microsoft is rumored to be adding ChatGPT to its Bing search engine.
Yeah, that’s right: The much-maligned, little-used Bing might finally become a real competitor to Google’s search.”
