Face­book and Insta­gram are under for­mal inves­ti­ga­tion in the Euro­pean Union over child pro­tec­tion con­cerns, the Com­mis­sion announced Thurs­day. The pro­ceed­ings fol­low a raft of requests for infor­ma­tion to par­ent enti­ty Meta since the bloc’s online gov­er­nance regime, the Dig­i­tal Ser­vices Act (DSA), start­ed apply­ing last August.

We’ve known for some time that Face­book traf­fic was unre­li­able. The very first AMO piece dis­cussed how Slate saw its Face­book traf­fic crater. But even if the nar­ra­tive hasn’t changed over the past near­ly five years, a 50% drop in the last 12 months is still size­able.

But that all changed recent­ly. With­out much fan­fare, Spo­ti­fy added a new num­ber to their episode overview pages: all-time “con­sump­tion hours.”
