👎 Facebook tester News Feed uden politik

TechCrunch skriver:

“The company qualified that these tests will be temporary, impact a small percentage of people and will only run in select markets, including the U.S., Canada, Brazil and Indonesia.”

Således arbejder Zuckerberg & Co. på deres egen Clubhouse-kopi, skriver The New York Times.

“On a call with investors today, Dorsey expanded on his vision of how a decentralized social network might work — and why Twitter would want to create a network that’s beyond the control of itself or any other company. Dorsey said Twitter would benefit by having access to “a much larger corpus of conversation” from which it can surface relevant content to users. “That’s where we will be competitive,” he said.”

🦠 Facebook skruer op i kampen mod misinformation om COVID-19

MediaWatch skriver:

🙅‍♂️ Twitter nægter at blokere journalister i Indien

Columbia Journalism Review skriver:

“On Tuesday, Twitter released a statement saying it plans to continue refusing the government’s orders to ban accounts belonging to journalists, media outlets, and politicians who have been critical of the government’s policies. “Because we do not believe that the actions we have been directed to take are consistent with Indian law, and, in keeping with our principles of defending protected speech and freedom of expression, we have not taken any action on accounts that consist of news media entities, journalists, activists, and politicians,” the company said.”

“Our results showed that users are definitely excited and capitalizing on the new Instagram feature due to its large audience reach. The total average views on TikTok equaled to 1.19+ million, while Instagram Reels came out to 1.2+ million. We also saw a huge difference in views per number of followers where the results came out to 144% view rate on number of followers for Instagram Reels and 24% for TikTok.”

🐦 Rygte: Twitter kigger på betalinger – bl.a. for TweetDeck

“At least one idea being considered is related to “tipping,” or the ability for users to pay the people they follow for exclusive content, said the people, who asked not to be named because the discussions are internal. Other possible ways to generate recurring revenue include charging for the use of services like Tweetdeck or advanced user features like “undo send” or profile-customization options.”

🔄 Clubhouse er anti-Twitter

OneZeros Will Oremus er altid værd at læse:

“I frame Twitter this way as a lens through which to view its contrasts with Clubhouse. Along many of the same axes on which Twitter can be characterized as flat and open, Clubhouse is hierarchical and closed — more oligarchic than democratic. That is almost surely intentional, and indeed a big part of its appeal to some.”

👎 NYTimes: Facebooks Oversight Board leverer ikke

The New York Times har kigget på starten af Facebooks nye råd og er ikke imponeret:

“The board will also take on only a vanishingly small number of cases each year — it has ruled so far on just five cases out of more than 150,000 submissions — meaning the vast majority of other challenges will fall to Facebook’s own moderators. For now, the board is only reviewing cases where posts or accounts may have been improperly taken down. It won’t yet look at the trickier question of what content should no longer be left up.”

“It’s 2021, and live blogging has made a comeback,” skriver de. Det comeback skete dog allerede i 2020.

🆕 Andreessen Horowitz starter tech-medie

“People want to learn about the future. If Software really is Eating the World, there needs to be a place that is dedicated to explaining and tracking it.

So we are doing just that: we are building a new and separate media property about the future that makes sense of technology, innovation, and where things are going — and now, we’re expanding and opening up our platform to do this on a much bigger scale. We want to be the go-to place for understanding and building the future, for anyone who is building, making, or curious about tech. “

Axios skriver:

“The open web — content that’s accessible via any web browser, easily linked to, and doesn’t require logging in to an account — is winning new attention even as “walled garden” apps like Facebook continue to dominate online distribution and the Google and Facebook duopoly controls most of the digital ad market.”

💌 Føljeton-redaktør bliver nyhedsbrevsredaktør hos Jysk Fynske

MediaWatch skriver:

““The strategy behind putting so many resources behind this email is it’s a great way to introduce new readers to what the newsletter has to offer, habituate them and have a long term relationship with us. It leads eventually to people paying for the paper,” [Adam Pasick, editorial director of newsletters at The New York Times] said.”

📈 Podcast-markedet vokser igen

What’s New In Publishing skriver:

“Ad sales intelligence organization, MediaRadar, has just released its analysis of podcast advertising in 2020, including the top podcast producers and top podcast advertisers.

The company, which offers competitive insights and advertising intelligence, found that ad spend on podcasts was up 11% year-over-year (YoY) in Q4 2020 and that growth had finally returned to the podcast industry.”

💳 Væksten i abonnementer fortsætter

What’s New in Publishing skriver:

“The Q3 2020 Digital Publishers Revenue Index (DPRI) from the Association of Online Publishers (AOP) and Deloitte, shows that the shift to subscription revenue amongst UK publishers has gained serious momentum. […]

The latest figures, released this week, have found that between Q3 2019 and Q3 2020, subscription revenue amongst publishers included in the AOP’s survey (comprising 14 B2C publishers and four B2B publishers) increased by more than 51%.”

😳 Reddit henter 250 mio. dollars i investering

TechCrunch skriver:

“This is Reddit’s 16th year of operation, and the company has raised around $800 million to date, including a Tencent-led $300 million Series D in February, 2019. Today’s round included financing from “existing and new investors,” Reddit noted in a blog post in which it announced the funding.”

🤝 WordPress VIP køber Parse.ly

Axios skriver:

“WordPress VIP (WPVIP), the enterprise arm of WordPress.com, is acquiring Parse.ly, a content analytics platform that’s used by thousands of digital publishers. […]

In a statement, the companies said that more than 800 combined enterprise customers worldwide will have access to the expanded set of capabilities — including Spotify, CNN, The Atlantic, and Slack.”

Del 4: Udvikling og tech

Her får du et kig på nogle af ugens historier indenfor den digitale udvikling og teknologi, der enten direkte eller indirekte kan have betydning for medier/udgivere.

😬 Nu kommer GDPR-bøderne

Computerworld skriver:

VentureBeat skriver:

“We talked to Google’s current leaders, early employees, proponents, and critics to look at how Google became such an important part of our lives. And we examine how a company whose key corporate motto used to be “don’t be evil” is facing accusations internally and externally that it’s strayed from that path as it’s grown its business.”

🤖 OpenAI og Stanford udtrykker GPT-3-bekymringer

VentureBeat skriver:

“The makers of large language models like Google and OpenAI may not have long to set standards that sufficiently address their impact on society. Open source projects currently aiming to recreate GPT-3 include GPT-Neo, a project headed by EleutherAI. That’s according to a paper published last week by researchers from OpenAI and Stanford University.”

“Governments of the Industrial World, you weary giants of flesh and steel, I come from Cyberspace, the new home of Mind. On behalf of the future, I ask you of the past to leave us alone. You are not welcome among us. You have no sovereignty where we gather.”

Sådan starter “A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace“, som John Perry Barlow (også kendt som tekstforfatter/lyriker for The Grateful Dead) skrev og udgave den 8. februar 1996.

Nieman Lab har en artikel om erklæringen i anledning af dens 25 års fødselsdag i mandags: “Today, it looks more like the DNA that produced many of today’s economic, political, and informational distortions”.
